Learn history by playing

When & Where? is a free history quiz in English and Turkish that helps you explore world history through time and place. Each round shows one of 600 historic events from the Bronze Age to the present day: battles and sieges, treaties, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, revolutions, assassinations and space missions.

First you guess the year on a timeline, then the location on a world map. When you seal your answer, the real date and place are revealed, and a short summary explains what happened and why it mattered. Each event finds its place in both chronology and geography.

What you will learn

  • Chronology: how events relate to each other in time, and the great eras — the Bronze Age, Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Early Modern period, the Age of Revolutions, the World Wars and the present day.
  • Historical geography: where battlefields, treaty cities and natural disasters are on the world map.
  • Context: the causes and consequences of each event, through the summary and source link shown after every round.

Who is it for?

It is made for history enthusiasts, students preparing for exams and teachers looking for an interactive classroom activity. No sign-up is needed, and it runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is completely free and needs no account. Your records are stored only in your own browser.
How is the score calculated?
Each round is worth up to 2000 points: 1000 for the date and 1000 for the place. A year within ±1 earns the full date score; a location within 150 km earns full points, and 4000 km or more earns none.
What is the Daily Challenge?
Every day everyone gets the same 10 events. Share your result to compare with friends or classmates.
Where does the event information come from?
Dates and coordinates come from Wikidata, event summaries from Wikipedia, and both are reviewed by hand. The map is drawn from Natural Earth data.
Can I use it in class?
Yes. Play it on a projector; with the Daily Challenge the whole class competes on the same events and can discuss them afterwards.

How to Play

  1. You are shown an event from history.
  2. First guess the year: drag the horizontal ruler to bring the needle onto your guess.
  3. Then mark on the map where it happened.
  4. Each round is worth up to 2000 points: 1000 for the date and 1000 for the place.
  5. An exact date earns 1000 points; the score shrinks as the error grows and drops to 0 past a threshold that depends on the event's age (±50 years for recent events, up to ±400 for ancient ones).
  6. Within 150 km earns 1000 points; it shrinks with distance and reaches 0 at 4000 km.
  7. A game has 10 events. In the Daily Challenge everyone gets the same events.
